Friday Night: We checked in at 5:30pm and started setting up camp. The weather report called for rain showers most of the evening with thunderstorms on Saturday so we wanted to put up our tent as soon as possible.
Coulter started the camp fire (using one match), while Lisa set up the bed and got dinner ready. We had tin foil dinners consisting of hamburger patties, potatoes, carrots, peppers, onions, mushrooms (Coulter only) and cheese. They were delicious!
We had a romantic sunset by the fire! So much for a rainy evening. The trees couldn't even keep the sunshine away!
Waiting for our tin foil dinners to cook. It was 8:30pm before they were ready to eat. Coulter's was larger so his took even longer than Lisa's. About 10:00pm we made some popcorn on our camp stove from Shar. Once we were done eating we cleaned up our dinner and simply sat and enjoyed watching the fire. It was very quiet and peaceful.
It was cold. Lisa was cold from the time we stepped out of the car until we got home from our trip (the bike ride being the only exception). We had separate sleeping bags and blankets but that wasn't enough. At 3:00am, Lisa woke Coulter up and made him put the sleeping bags together because she couldn't sleep. Thanks Lucas & Mindy for the cool sleeping bags that zip up together! They worked great.
Saturday Morning: It rained while we were sleeping but not enough to really matter. Coulter was still able to get a fire started fairly easily.
Getting ready for breakfast. Lisa made hot chocolate and apple cider on the camp stove.
Breakfast is ready! We made skillet egg mess with bacon, potatoes, peppers, onions, mushrooms and eggs. It was great for our first time cooking over a fire. After breakfast it was time to clean up camp. We were gone by 11:30am and ready for our next adventure at Bendix Woods.
Bendix Woods: Coulter is taking the last bike off the car and we are almost ready for our ride! We went for a bike ride all throughout the trails of the park. Coulter was the lead navigator as Lisa was too scared to go first. At one point, we took a wrong turn and ended up on the advanced course. Rather than turn around we stayed with it for a while. That was Coulter's favorite part. It had us going along the edge of a hill, over rocks, weaving in and out between trees and up and down hills. Lisa loved going downhill so we did the big hill twice!
An hour and a half later we made it back to the car. We ate a picnic lunch at the pavilion. It took all the energy we had left to load up the bikes and drive home. Back at the apartment we unloaded the car and crashed on the bed for several hours. It was a great outdoor experience and we hope the first of many!
